Students skipping the pub at home

Recent research from studentbeans.com reporting into the drinking habits of university students in the UK reveals that students may be skipping the traditional pub or student bar in favour of drinking with friends at home before heading out to nightclubs.

82% of student respondents drink alcohol at friends’ houses during term time at university, followed by 68% who drink at nightclubs. 52% of students who drink do so in the pub, whilst 38% say they drink in their student union. Only 14% of respondents drink alcohol in restaurants.

A staggering 92% of students say they buy alcohol from a supermarket whilst at
university, highlighting just how price-sensitive and receptive to special offers students can be.

Commenting on the results, Mark Edwards, marketing director of studentbeans.com, says, “Students tend to live with their friends and socialise at home, so perhaps there’s no need to go to the pub. There are probably three to five people at home and they get their beer or vodka in from the supermarket then head into town later.”

“With budgets becoming even tighter, deals and promotions at supermarkets can often be very persuasive for students, as well as providing the advantage of splitting the costs amongst housemates or friends.”
